HHS Resource

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a new Web site (www.smallpox.gov) that provides answers to questions about smallpox and the President's vaccination plan.  HHS recommends the site for those who will be receiving the smallpox vaccination or are considering whether or not to get vaccinated.

CDC Resource

Another resource for potential recipients of the smallpox vaccine is a new presentation on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web site.  The presentation is an archived version of a recent satellite broadcast on preparing potential smallpox response team volunteers to make an informed decision about vaccination.  Targeted at hospital staff members who may be potential smallpox vaccine recipients, the CDC presentation provides information about the conditions that increase the risk of a serious complication and instructions for caring for the vaccination site to avoid transmission of the vaccine virus.  The presentation also explains the rationale for vaccination, describes the risks of vaccination to individuals and their families, demonstrates how the vaccine is administered, describes mild and serious vaccine complications and how they would be treated; and discusses compensation issues for persons who experience vaccine complications.  The presentation is available at www.cdc.gov/smallpox.

New England Journal of Medicine Resource
