HIPAA Tip of the Week – Strong Passwords (1/27/05)

The HIPAA Security Rule requires use of some means to authenticate the identity of computer system users. In the vast majority of home care agencies, passwords serve as the sole identity security control. As a result, you should have guidelines in place instructing your staff on how to construct “strong passwords.” Passwords should be a minimum of six characters, mixing both alphas and numerics. No names, addresses, SSNs or words found in the dictionary (either forward or reverse) should be used. Passwords should be changed regularly and should not be shared with others. For a free copy of sample password guidelines contact Stony Hill Management at info@hipaahomecare.com and put “password guidelines” in the subject line where to buy CC-iPhone4XL
